Matterport Pro3: A First-Time User’s Guide

How Easy Is It to Use Matterport?

If you’re working in design and construct, managing refurbishment projects, or delivering fit-outs, Matterport can dramatically improve how you capture existing conditions, produce floor plans and CAD files, and create a seamless 3D model of your site.

But how easy is it to actually use? The short answer: very. Matterport was designed to be simple, fast, and repeatable — even for first-time users. If you can follow a logical path through a space and familiar with using an iPad, you’re already most of the way there.

Step 1: Set Up Your Gear and Prepare the Site

With the Matterport Pro3 Performance Kit, everything you need is ready to go:

  • Camera

  • Tripod

  • Batteries

  • Charging Kit

  • Dolly and backpack

  • iPad (recommended – not included in the kit)

Before you start scanning:

  • Turn on all the lights

  • Open doors between rooms you want to include

  • Tidy up cables, boxes, or obstacles

  • Don’t make changes once you’ve started scanning — Matterport aligns each scan to the previous one using spatial and visual data, so consistency is key

Step 2: Start Your First Scan

  1. Set up the tripod at your first scan location

  2. Power on the camera

  3. Open the Matterport Capture App on your iPad

  4. Tap “+ New Job” and name it using the property address

  5. Tap Scan — the camera will rotate and begin capturing the space

Each scan takes around 20–30 seconds, and you’ll see the model begin to build in real time on your iPad.

Step 3: Move Through the Site Logically

The Capture App aligns each scan to the previous one as you move through the space. It’s important to:

  • Follow a logical scanning path, like you’d walk a client or contractor through the space

  • Scan every 3–5 metres for full coverage and alignment

  • Avoid standing in view of the camera — step around corners or hide behind walls when scanning

  • Mark mirrors and windows in the app to reduce alignment issues and reflections

  • Don’t move items or open/close doors partway through — Matterport uses a mesh of data to keep everything aligned

A standard size house or a typical office suite might take 30–60 minutes; larger projects will scale up accordingly.

Step 4: Upload and Post-Process

Once scanning is complete:

  • Tap Upload in the Capture App (no internet is needed during scanning — only for upload)

  • Your model will be sent to Matterport’s cloud for processing

  • You’ll get an email once the 3D model is ready (usually within a few hours)

From your dashboard, you can:

  • Generate shareable links

  • Order floor plans or point cloud files (e.g. E57 for CAD or BIM use)

  • Use blur tools to hide sensitive areas like computer screens or whiteboards

  • Add tags to label items, include notes, or link to documents — great for internal teams or tender packages

What to Expect as a First-Time User

Most users feel confident after just one or two jobs. If you’ve ever managed site documentation or walkthroughs with photos and markups, the logic behind Matterport will feel very familiar — it just replaces dozens of manual steps with one smart scan.

And if you need help — we’re here. At Asset 3D, we support all our clients with onboarding, field-tested tips, and quick advice when you need it.

Common Questions We Hear

Q: What if I forget to scan an area or make a mistake?
You can reopen a model and scan more areas — then re-upload the updated version. Matterport is flexible and forgiving.

Q: Do I need Wi-Fi on-site?
No — everything is stored on your iPad. You’ll only need internet access when you’re ready to upload the completed scan.

Q: What about busy or active worksites?
You can still scan during site activity, though it’s best to do so when foot traffic is minimal. Most people will naturally avoid the camera when it’s spinning.

It’s Easier Than You Think

You don’t need to be tech-savvy — just methodical.
With Matterport, you capture the entire site once and create outputs for quoting, planning, approvals, and handover. It’s efficient, visual, and far more engaging than photos or sketches.

And with the Pro3 Performance Kit, you’ve got the right tool for the job.
