The 4 Essentials to Start Using Matterport
Getting started is easier than you might think. In fact, you only need four essential items to begin creating accurate, immersive digital models of your sites.
1. A Matterport-Compatible Camera
Matterport supports a range of cameras, but if you’re serious about quality and professional results, there’s one clear front-runner.
Matterport Pro3 – The latest and most advanced camera using LiDAR technology. It captures highly accurate scans indoors and outdoors, making it ideal for large or complex commercial sites.
Matterport Pro2 – No longer in production, but limited stock is available internationally. Delivers similar visual output to the Pro3 (indoors only), but lacks outdoor capability and advanced features.
360 Cameras & iPhones/iPads – These are supported by the Matterport platform but offer limited visual quality and functionality. They’re suited to basic residential scans or trials, but not recommended for commercial or professional use.
For the design, construction and fit-out industries, we strongly recommend the Matterport Pro3 for its speed, accuracy, and versatility.
Why We Recommend the Pro3 Performance Kit
In Australia, the Matterport Pro3 is only available in the Performance Kit package, which includes everything you need to start scanning professionally:
What’s Included in the Performance Kit:
1 x Matterport Pro3 Camera
1 x Charging Kit
2 x Batteries
1 Year Warranty
1 x Tripod with Mount
1 x Hard Case
1 x Backpack
1 x Wheeled Dolly
2 x Doorstops
Delivery (Australia-wide)
It’s a complete solution designed for professionals — reliable, portable, and ready to go out of the box.
2. A Tripod
You’ll need a tripod with a 3/8” mounting screw, which is standard for most professional cameras. Look for a tripod that’s:
Sturdy enough to handle uneven or outdoor surfaces
Lightweight and easy to transport
Quick to set up and adjust during site work
The tripod included in the Performance Kit has been field-tested across thousands of scans and performs well in a wide range of environments.
3. An iPad (Best for Performance and Stability)
While the Matterport Capture app works with iPads, iPhones, and some Android devices, we strongly recommend using an iPad for the best results.
Why?
iPads have faster processors and greater stability running the Matterport app
Many users report fewer connection or crashing issues compared to Android devices
The larger screen size makes it easier to view and manage your scans onsite
Matterport was originally developed for iOS, and while Android compatibility continues to improve, iPads remain the most reliable and user-friendly option — especially on larger or more complex jobs.
Top Tip: Reduce your iPad’s screen brightness to extend battery life during long scanning sessions.
4. A Matterport Account (Subscription)
To process and host your scans, you’ll need a Matterport subscription plan. These vary depending on how many spaces you’re capturing and how much storage you need.
At a minimum, you’ll need:
A Basic or Professional Plan (starting from a few spaces/month)
Access to your account dashboard (for managing models, generating links, ordering floor plans, etc.)
The good news? You can upgrade or downgrade your plan as your business grows — and we’re happy to walk you through the options if you’re unsure.
